What’s the difference between open- and closed-system breast pumps?

Today we are going to talk about the difference between open and closed breasts pumps and why it is important to know the differences.

A breast pump with a milk barrier is known as a closed system as it’s ‘closed off’ from the milk. This barrier prevents the milk from overflowing and leaking into the pump mechanisms. It decreases the possibility of mold growth, it is considered to be more hygenic since it contains a filter that catches the milk before it reaches the pumping working parts. It can be used for many years!!

An open-system breast pump doesn’t have a milk barrier as a result mold may grow and viruses are easily subjected to this breasts pump.

Now I will list different brands of closed system pumps that may be of your liking. You can research more in depth to see if it will be a great fit for you on your breastfeeding and or pumping journey!

Spectra S1 Plus Electric Breast Pump (Closed System)

It is a closed system offering the option for single or double pumping and has a strong, adjustable vacuum pump that most insurances do cover! If you are exclusively pumping, I would suggest this pump for your use. It’s lightweight and portable, with a carrying handle it includes both power cord and battery options, which is very useful on the go!) It also has a night-light with two light levels and a timer that can be useful for those early morning pumping sessions.INCLUDES: Spectra S1 Hospital Grade Double/Single Breast Pump, 12 Volt AC Power Adapter, Detachable Power Cord Prongs, (2) Spectra Wide Neck Bottle, (2) Spectra Backflow Protector, (2) Spectra Duckbill Valve, (2) Spectra Tubing, (4) Flange (2-24mm & 2-28mm)

As in my previous blog about accessories the HAAKAA is a breasts pump, a silicone one, but you will need to be careful because the term " crying over spilled milk" can be a factor when using it!
