Nausea When Breastfeeding?!

Many mothers have reported nausea while breastfeeding, especially in the early weeks of breastfeeding. It can go away for most moms, but there is a small percentage where mothers will experience this for longer period of times. If you still continue to feel nauseous during breastfeeding, you may want to also consider taking a pregnancy test!


Many women feel Nauseous during what is called a milk let- down. The release of what is called oxytocin which is a hormone that helps make digestion more effcient that can cause your gut hormones to make you feel nauseous. You may experience itching on and around your nipple or under your arms during a let- down due to the increase blood flow or response to oxytocin being released.


Mothers with a history of abuse such as myself may experienced agitation, anxiety and even anger. You may also get a headache, feel very tired and may also just be dehydrated!


Ways to combat Nausea while breastfeeding:


Before feeding grabbed something to eat or drink. Something with salt such as a saltine crackers.


Increasing fluids can help a


lot, and always snack often to avoid low blood sugar.


You have to remember to drink and most mothers do not have time or do not get a chance, especially during the early days of breastfeeding. Keep several bottles of water around the house in places where you typically sit down with baby, so that there is something easily available when you’re thirsty.
