Can I give my breastfed baby water?

The Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine advises “ Supplementation with water or glucose water, increases the risks of jaundice, excessive weight loss, and longer stays in hospital stays”. According to American Academy of Pediatrics, “ supplements (water, glucose water, formula) should NOT be given to infants unless ordered by a physician when a medical indication exists. During the first 6 months of age, even in hot climates, water and juice are unnecessary to breasts fed infants and may introduce contaminants or allergens.”

Remember your breasts milk is made up of over 80% of water, so there is no need to give your baby water especially during the early months for your baby. If you do so, your baby may be at risks for what is called waster intoxication..........
